CURRIER & IVES MAPLE SUGAR WEEKEND
March 23-25
From late February through early April, farmers in nearly
every hilltown village in New Hampshire honor an old New
England tradition. They take to the woods with buckets, tubing
and drills to gather the sap from sugar maple trees, boiling it down
to pure maple syrup. sugaring is the first sign of the annual
agricultural awakening. Old-man winter disappears in puffs
of sweet steam from weather-beaten sugarhouses.
The warmth of the evaporator and the aroma of hot syrup
contrasts with the lingering chill outside.
It's time for the Rosewood's famous Belgian Waffles with
Bananas and Maple Walnut Sauce. Or for hot, thickened syrup
dribbled over a pan of clean snow to make a rich taffy called
"sugar on snow". Our New Hampshire sugarhouses welcome
visitors to share the joy of the first true "rite of spring".
This is a sure cure for winter doldrums! This weekend package
includes a mapped, self guided tour of neighboring sugar houses…
see maple syrup made the old-fashioned way and learn the history
of the time honored tradition from the Native Americans
to the present. The guide also includes suggestions for antiquing
and shopping, and areas for snow shoeing and X-C skiing.
After a day of touring, you’re off on a romantic sleigh ride through
the snow covered fields of King Hill Farm!
